Nestled in the heart of the Aegean Sea, Syros is a gem among the Greek islands. It offers an enchanting blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Unlike its more famous neighbours, Mykonos and Santorini, Syros exudes a unique charm with its neoclassical architecture, vibrant streets, and serene beaches. If you’re dreaming of an idyllic getaway, Syros should undoubtedly be on your list.

Exploring Ermoupoli: The Heart of Syros
Ermoupoli, the island’s capital, is a delightful mix of Venetian and neoclassical influences. As you stroll through its cobbled streets, you’ll be captivated by the pastel-coloured buildings, grand mansions, and bustling squares. The Town Hall, designed by the renowned architect Ernst Ziller, stands majestically in Miaouli Square. It offers a glimpse into the island’s rich history.
During our unforgettable visit to Syros, our stay at Syros Soul Luxury Suites in Ermoupoli was a highlight that made our trip even more special. This charming accommodation offered the perfect combination of comfort, convenience, and breathtaking views. It made an ideal home base for our island adventure.
Perfectly Central
Syros Soul’s prime location in the heart of Ermoupoli made exploring the island incredibly convenient. Nestled just steps away from Miaouli Square, the vibrant center of town, we were able to immerse ourselves in the lively atmosphere of Syros with ease. Wandering the cobblestone streets, discovering quaint shops, and enjoying local delicacies at nearby tavernas were just a few of the delightful activities within our reach.
Breathtaking Views
One of the most memorable aspects of our stay was the view from our room. Each morning, we were greeted by the majestic sight of the Town Hall, a neoclassical masterpiece. At night, the illuminated building provided a stunning backdrop, adding a touch of magic to our evenings. The picturesque scene from our window was a constant reminder of the beauty and history that envelops Syros.

Culinary Delights: Where to Eat
Syros is a paradise for food lovers. One of our favorite dining experiences was at Maritso’s. This charming restaurant offers a delightful array of traditional Greek dishes, all prepared with fresh, local ingredients. The friendly atmosphere and delicious food made it a memorable meal. I especially loved my Moussaka.
For a more upscale dining experience, we indulged in a fancy dinner under the stars at Ciel. After a day of wandering through Ermoupoli and swimming at Astoria Beach, dining at Ciel was a perfect ending. The ambiance was magical, and the view of the St. Nicholas Church from our table was a true “pinch me” moment.
There are plenty of Restaurants and cafes spread out around the Island, especially around the Port area. You can just wander around at night very safely and find something to your liking.

Sun, Sea, and Sand: Best Beaches
Syros is graced with some of the most captivating beaches in the Cyclades. Astoria Beach holds a special place in our hearts. This serene haven became one of our favorite spots during our visit. It offers an enchanting blend of natural beauty and tranquil moments.
Imagine the scene: clear, crystalline waters shimmering under the warm embrace of the sun. The inviting blue hues beckon you to take a refreshing dip, and as you do, the cool water envelops you in a soothing embrace. Astoria Beach is unique—not a sandy stretch, but a smooth cement platform where friends and families gather. From here, you can dive straight into the Agean sea, the water so clear it feels like a dream.

As you rise from the water, droplets glistening on your skin, your eyes are drawn to a breathtaking sight. Perched majestically on a hill overlooking the sea, St. Nicholas Church stands stunningly. Its grandeur and beauty are almost otherworldly, creating a perfect backdrop to the serene waters below. This magical combination of sea and sky, with the church standing as a guardian over the bay, makes Astoria Beach an unforgettable slice of paradise.
Our time at Astoria Beach was filled with these moments of pure bliss. Nature’s beauty and a sense of peace intertwined to create memories that will last a lifetime. If you ever find yourself on the enchanting island of Syros, a visit to Astoria Beach is an absolute must, where magic and tranquility await.
Other notable beaches include Galissas Beach, known for its family-friendly atmosphere and calm waters, and Kini Beach. Kini Beach is a great spot to watch the sunset while enjoying a refreshing drink at one of the beachfront bars. We wish we had more days on this Island to take in all of these wonderful spots.

Venturing to Anos Syros
A visit to Syros wouldn’t be complete without exploring Anos Syros, the island’s medieval quarter. Perched on a hill above Ermoupoli, this charming village offers a step back in time with its narrow alleyways, whitewashed houses, and picturesque churches. The ascent can be a bit steep, but the stunning views of the island and the Aegean Sea are worth every step. (If you’re not a walker I’d suggest taking a taxi to the top and then walking back down through the streets.)
As you reach the top, take a moment to rest at Della Suda Bar. With its panoramic view of the island, it’s an ideal spot to relax with a drink and soak in the beauty of Syros. The serene atmosphere and breathtaking scenery make it a perfect retreat.
We stopped here for a drink before heading to our amazing dinner at Ciel. We all said we could have stayed longer and spent the night just sitting here taking in the view. (As I’m writing this, it’s very hard for me not to have a giggle. It brings back some memories of lots of giggles on this night. Insider joke for those on the trip, haha.)
It was a really great afternoon, swimming in the crystal clear sea, exploring the medieval streets, stopping for a drink and enjoying the view, then on to our stunning dinner. We looked out over the sea and up to St. Nicholas. I highly recommend it all.
